UN states define autonomous weapons as Germany outlines AI military rules

128 UN member states agreed on a definition for autonomous weapons, as Germany outlined guidelines for military AI and announced an in-house alternative to Palantir.
At a conference in Geneva, 128 United Nations member states agreed on a formal definition for autonomous weapon systems. The decision follows joint warnings from the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross cautioning against crossing a moral red line regarding automated targeting of humans.
Meanwhile, Germany's Ministry of Defence clarified its framework for military artificial intelligence, noting that certain weapon systems may execute automated functions without continuous step-by-step human intervention. However, officials emphasized that "the decision on the use of military force remains with humans." In a related move to preserve digital sovereignty, the Bundeswehr declined to adopt software from US firm Palantir, opting instead to develop a proprietary AI data-analysis system to accelerate operational decision-making.
