NATO and Ukraine partner on military AI as global debate on autonomous weapons continues

Ukraine and NATO have developed AI tools for drone defense and targeting as international efforts to regulate autonomous weapons advance in Geneva.
Ukraine and NATO have jointly developed two artificial intelligence applications designed to predict hostile drone operations and assist artillery targeting for Ukrainian forces, according to Ukraine's Defence Ministry. One model is currently being prepared for integration into operational situational awareness systems.
The project comes alongside broader international developments surrounding military AI. In Geneva, 128 UN member states established a standard definition for autonomous weapons, following ethical warnings from the UN and International Committee of the Red Cross about machine targeting. Concurrently, Germany's Ministry of Defence confirmed that human decision-making governs the overall use of force, though semi-autonomous functions may operate independently depending on operational context. Germany also opted against adopting data software from US firm Palantir, choosing to build a proprietary system instead.
