UN defines autonomous weapons as Germany pursues sovereign military AI

UN member states defined autonomous weapons in Geneva as Germany advances semi-autonomous Bundeswehr systems and independent military AI data infrastructure.
International efforts to regulate artificial intelligence in warfare reached a milestone in Geneva, where 128 United Nations member states agreed on a formal definition for autonomous weapons systems. The agreement follows joint warnings from the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross regarding machines autonomously targeting humans.
Simultaneously, Germany is adapting its defense strategy. New Bundeswehr concept papers confirm that military systems may operate semi-autonomously in specific scenarios without continuous human involvement. However, a defense ministry spokesperson affirmed, "the decision on the use of military force remains with humans."
To safeguard strategic sovereignty and data analysis capabilities under high pressure, Germany has also opted to build an independent AI data platform rather than relying on US vendor Palantir.
