Ukraine's parliament condemned Soviet-era atrocities against Transcarpathian Hungarians as Kyiv works to repair ties with Hungary and navigate historical disputes with Poland.

Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada has adopted a resolution formally condemning Soviet-era crimes and forced labor inflicted upon Transcarpathian Hungarians between 1944 and 1946. Ukrainian diplomatic sources indicate that repairing strained relations with Budapest remains a critical objective for Kyiv to advance European Union accession negotiations and secure transit routes for agricultural exports.

Meanwhile, historical grievances continue to test ties with neighboring Poland. Recent diplomatic friction worsened after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky conferred honors on military units associated with the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, leading Polish President Karol Nawrocki to revoke a state distinction previously awarded to a Ukrainian official.
