Ukraine moves to mend regional ties as historical disputes persist

Ukraine aims to repair relations with Hungary while facing renewed diplomatic tensions with Poland over historical honors.
Hungary’s Foreign Ministry welcomed a resolution by the Ukrainian parliament condemning Soviet-era forced labor and anti-Hungarian atrocities in Transcarpathia. Budapest expressed willingness to partner with Kyiv on historical research and memorializing victims. Ukrainian diplomatic sources noted that restoring bilateral relations remains a priority for President Volodymyr Zelensky, who seeks to advance European Union accession negotiations and secure transit routes for Ukrainian agricultural exports.
However, historical tensions continue to complicate Kyiv’s regional diplomacy. Bilateral friction with Poland recently flared after President Zelensky conferred a military honor linked to the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) on a combat unit. In response, Polish President Karol Nawrocki revoked a Polish state distinction previously awarded to a Ukrainian official.
