Hungary welcomed a Ukrainian resolution on Soviet-era atrocities as Kyiv seeks to repair regional ties, even as historical disputes with Poland continue.

Hungary’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has welcomed a resolution passed by Ukraine’s parliament condemning Soviet-era forced labor and anti-Hungarian atrocities in Transcarpathia. Budapest expressed readiness to collaborate with Kyiv on historical research and honoring victims. Ukrainian diplomatic sources indicated that restoring bilateral relations remains a priority for President Volodymyr Zelensky, who aims to advance European Union integration and secure agricultural export routes.

Simultaneously, historical grievances persist in Ukraine’s relations with Poland. Diplomatic tensions recently escalated after Zelensky conferred an honor associated with the Ukrainian Insurgent Army on a military unit, leading Polish President Karol Nawrocki to revoke a state distinction previously awarded to a Ukrainian official.
