Ukraine faces internal intelligence firefight and diplomatic strain with regional neighbors

A street in Kyiv was closed after a firefight between Ukraine's HUR and SBU, while diplomatic tensions with Poland and Hungary remain in focus.
In Kyiv, armed personnel from Ukraine's HUR military intelligence service and the SBU security service engaged in a firefight on Wednesday morning, forcing law enforcement to isolate a street. The internal conflict underscores long-standing rivalries between two vital wartime state organs.
Concurrently, historical grievances continue to strain regional diplomacy. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's decision to name a military formation after figures tied to the Ukrainian Insurgent Army prompted Polish President Karol Nawrocki to strip a Ukrainian official of a state decoration.
Meanwhile, Kyiv is seeking to bolster diplomatic channels with Hungary. On Hungary's national day, Zelensky dispatched greetings to Hungarian leadership and formally invited politician Péter Magyar to Kyiv for bilateral discussions aimed at improving good-neighborly relations and mutual respect.
