Trump and Xi discuss Ukraine and security during White House summit

US President Donald Trump held bilateral talks with Chinese leader Xi Jinping at the White House, addressing major international issues including the war in Ukraine, the Middle East, and the Korean Peninsula. The discussion formed part of Xi’s three-day state visit to the United States, his first official visit to the country in over a decade.

The meeting followed discussions between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who urged Washington to leverage Beijing’s influence over Moscow to secure a de-escalation in Ukraine. Analysts noted that Beijing might seek economic or trade concessions from Washington in exchange for adjusting its position on Russia.

Trump greeted Xi directly at the steps of his aircraft upon arrival, extending a diplomatic gesture he previously reserved for Russian President Vladimir Putin during their summit in Alaska.
