Study reveals widespread censorship on Russian streaming platform Amediateka
An investigation revealed that Russian streaming service Amediateka removed 75 hours of foreign TV footage amid broader state content restrictions.
Russian streaming service Amediateka has censored foreign television series to adhere to domestic regulations, according to an investigation by Mediazona. Analysis shows censors edited roughly 200 shows, deleting more than 7,300 scenes amounting to 75 hours of footage. Excluded content includes depictions of non-traditional sexual relations, substance abuse, self-harm, and incest, occasionally eliminating primary plotlines.
Concurrently, legal and educational measures targeting Western cultural influences and LGBT content have intensified across Russia. A court recently outlawed the romance novel Heated Rivalry under anti-LGBT propaganda laws. Furthermore, secondary schools in Novosibirsk received educational texts promoting military involvement in Ukraine while asserting traditional moral values, criticizing Western media, and drawing explicit parallels between homosexuality and criminal deviance.
