SPD ministers in Germany have detailed updated climate adaptation plans, continuing to push for a constitutional amendment despite resistance from the conservative CDU/CSU opposition.

German ministers from the Social Democratic Party (SPD) have intensified calls to amend the Basic Law to include climate adaptation as a permanent joint task across federal, state, and municipal governments.

Following initial resistance from the opposition CDU/CSU bloc, SPD ministers responsible for justice, construction, and the environment released updated details of their climate action plan. The revised measures aim to address extreme weather impacts, including severe heatwaves and prolonged drought, by establishing a framework for long-term funding and unified national standards.

However, enacting the changes requires a two-thirds majority in parliament, making approval impossible without conservative support. The CDU/CSU has reiterated skepticism toward modifying the constitution for climate adaptation, creating a political stalemate over the legislation.
