Search efforts continue along the Nepal-Tibet border following catastrophic flash flooding triggered by a glacial collapse, leaving over 160 dead and hundreds missing.

Search and rescue operations are continuing along the Himalayan border between Nepal and Tibet after catastrophic flash flooding devastated mountain communities. Officials report that over 1,000 people, including roughly 800 foreign tourists, remain missing. Initial reports on the death toll varied significantly, with early accounts citing between 17 and 22 fatalities before confirmed figures exceeded 160.

While early reports cited rapid snowmelt or suspected seismic activity, the United States Geological Survey confirmed a glacial collapse and subsequent landslide triggered the deluge. The surge destroyed bridges, villages, and infrastructure in Nepal's Rasuwa district and caused extensive damage in China's Gyirong sector. Emergency workers on both sides of the border face severe obstacles from ruined roads and cut power lines. International relief has begun to arrive, including $500,000 in emergency aid pledged by the United States to assist search efforts.
