Portugal will expand temporary placement capacity for undocumented migrants to 171 spots by September, while West African Atlantic arrivals dropped 78%.

Portugal will increase its temporary placement capacity for undocumented migrants to 171 spaces by September following expansion works at its Porto facility, falling short of an initial 300-space objective.

Concurrently, Portuguese law enforcement documented over 14,000 domestic violence occurrences, representing an average of 82 reported cases per day. Separately, eight Afghan women marked one year of sanctuary in Portugal after escaping Taliban restrictions banning women from public life.

Beyond Europe, International Organization for Migration figures show arrivals via the West African Atlantic route plummeted 78 percent in early 2026. Tighter border cooperation between Senegal and Mauritania curbed departures, though remaining passage attempts are increasingly dangerous.
