Thousands of counter-protesters blocked an Orange Order march in Portadown following a court ruling allowing a restricted procession through Garvaghy Road.

Tensions remain elevated in Portadown, Northern Ireland, as a controversial Protestant Orange Order parade was delayed and blocked by thousands of counter-protesters along Garvaghy Road on Sunday.

A late-night ruling by the Belfast High Court had permitted 35 Orangemen to hold a restricted, silent march from Drumcree Church between 8:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., marking the first allowed procession through the predominantly nationalist area in nearly three decades. However, thousands of demonstrators—including Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O'Neill—assembled along the designated route, preventing the participants from advancing.

Police subsequently halted the procession to maintain public safety, causing the designated time window to lapse. Discussions between parade organisers, community representatives, and law enforcement were ongoing as both groups remained in the area.
