An Orange Order parade in Portadown was blocked by counter-protesters along Garvaghy Road despite a High Court ruling permitting the march.

A contentious Protestant Orange Order procession in Portadown was halted on Sunday after thousands of counter-demonstrators blocked its designated route along the predominantly nationalist Garvaghy Road.

Hours earlier, an emergency Belfast High Court session upheld a Parades Commission decision permitting 35 members to march from Drumcree Church for the first time since the late 1990s. The court scheduled the procession to conclude by 09:30, but participants were unable to proceed after counter-protesters, including Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O'Neill, gathered on the road.

Police officers stepped in to prevent the marchers from advancing past security checkpoints to avert public disorder. Both groups remained in the area as discussions involving organizers, community representatives, and law enforcement continued.
