A controversial Orange Order march in Portadown was halted after thousands of counter-protesters blocked the route along Garvaghy Road.

Tensions in Portadown remained high on Sunday after thousands of counter-protesters blocked a controversial Orange Order parade along Garvaghy Road, preventing the procession from proceeding.

An early-morning Belfast High Court ruling had upheld a Parades Commission decision permitting 35 members of the Protestant order to conduct a silent march between 8:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., marking the first authorized parade through the predominantly nationalist area since the late 1990s. However, the large crowd of demonstrators, which included Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O'Neill, prevented marchers from setting off from Drumcree Church.

Police intervened to halt the advance for public safety, causing the allocated timeframe to expire. Talks among parade organizers, local representatives, and police persisted as both groups remained in the area.
