Education, cultural funding, and regional identity have become central themes in political debates ahead of upcoming state elections in eastern Germany.

Political debates surrounding historical memory, cultural funding, and education have intensified ahead of upcoming state elections in eastern Germany. The federal commissioner for victims of the SED dictatorship, Evelyn Zupke, advocated for compulsory student visits to former East German memorial sites, citing inadequate knowledge of DDR history among youth. Concurrently, educators in eastern states reported increasing occurrences of far-right symbols and extremist behavior within classrooms.

Cultural policy has also emerged as a key point of contention. In Saxony-Anhalt, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) proposed revoking state funds for cultural institutions deemed anti-German, raising concerns over future support for Bauhaus sites, Holocaust memorials, and regional theaters. Meanwhile, broader identity debates continue across eastern regions, alongside municipal challenges in Berlin, where nearly 400 teachers have been on long-term sick leave for over a year.
