Education, cultural policy, and teacher shortages are dominating political debates in eastern Germany and Berlin ahead of upcoming regional state elections.

Education and cultural policy have become key points of contention ahead of upcoming regional elections in eastern Germany. Teachers in eastern states report growing concern over far-right extremist incidents among students, including the display of prohibited symbols and nationalist songs. To address gaps in historical knowledge, Evelyn Zupke, the federal commissioner for victims of communist dictatorship, proposed mandatory student visits to former East German memorial sites.

Concurrently, the Alternative for Germany party in Saxony-Anhalt proposed cutting state funding for cultural initiatives deemed "anti-German," raising concerns for institutions including the Bauhaus and Holocaust memorials. Identity debates also persist as regional heritage features prominently in campaigning. Meanwhile, administrative data from Berlin revealed that nearly 400 schoolteachers have been on sick leave for over a year.
