Germany's government faces mounting domestic strain from an expanded AfD poll lead, internal SPD calls for new leadership, and anti-government protests in Plauen.

Germany's federal coalition faces increasing domestic challenges as political polling, internal party dissent, and street protests converge. According to the latest Deutschlandtrend survey, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) has extended its polling lead over the conservative CDU/CSU alliance.

Simultaneously, pressure is mounting within the Social Democratic Party (SPD). The internal group "AG Migration und Vielfalt" has demanded an autumn special party conference to replace current leadership, arguing existing leaders have failed.

In Saxony, thousands gathered in Plauen for anti-government demonstrations organized by "Einigkeit für Deutschland." Attendance estimates varied, with FAZ citing police figures of approximately 10,000 participants, while Die Zeit reported that local authorities refrained from immediately confirming exact turnout.

Meanwhile, official Interior Ministry data indicated that initial asylum applications dropped in July to 4,311, nearly half the rate recorded in July 2025.
