Germany reports a steep drop in July asylum applications while anti-government protests in Saxony and new poll gains for the AfD highlight growing political unrest.

Germany recorded a sharp drop in initial asylum applications in July, with figures falling to 4,311—nearly half the total recorded in July 2025. Data from the Federal Ministry of the Interior confirms a broader downward trend over the past six months.

Concurrently, political unrest continues. In Saxony, thousands gathered in Plauen for anti-government demonstrations demanding the cabinet's resignation. While 10,000 participants were registered, official estimates varied initially between authorities and police reports.

In Berlin, SPD candidate Steffen Krach proposed deploying police checks and heavy fines to combat excessive rent costs, alongside creating a central rent registry. Meanwhile, the latest Deutschlandtrend survey shows the Alternative for Germany (AfD) expanding its lead over the CDU/CSU alliance, alongside growing public support for pragmatic, case-by-case cooperation.
