Debates surrounding far-right extremism in schools, historical education, and cultural funding intensify in eastern Germany ahead of upcoming state elections.

Ahead of upcoming state elections in eastern Germany, debates concerning regional identity, historical education, and cultural policy are escalating. Educators in eastern states report a troubling prevalence of far-right symbols and extremist behavior in classrooms, including swastikas and Nazi-era songs. To address gaps in historical awareness, Evelyn Zupke, the federal commissioner for victims of the SED regime, urged state authorities to mandate student visits to East German memorial sites.

Simultaneously, the Alternative for Germany party proposed stripping public funding from institutions and projects it deems "anti-German," threatening financial support for local theaters, Holocaust memorials, and modern design centers like the Bauhaus. Meanwhile, in Berlin, administrative strains in the education sector persist as nearly 400 public school teachers have remained on continuous sick leave for over a year.
