EU extends Russia sanctions after compromise on removing two oligarchs

EU member states extended sanctions against nearly 3,000 Russian individuals and entities after agreeing to delist two oligarchs and adopting a record new sanctions package.
European Union member states have resolved diplomatic friction to extend sanctions against nearly 3,000 individuals and entities linked to Russia’s war in Ukraine.
To reach the required unanimous consent before existing measures expired, member states agreed to remove steel magnate Alisher Usmanov and banker Mikhail Fridman from the blacklist. The decision followed requests from several countries, including France, Slovakia, and Luxembourg.
Simultaneously, EU foreign ministers meeting in Luxembourg approved a new, record-sized sanctions package aimed at restricting Russia's war economy. While the compromise maintains the broader regime of asset freezes and travel bans, it highlights ongoing internal debates over individual economic restrictions among member nations.
