Rising far-right rhetoric in eastern German schools and AfD cultural proposals have sparked intense debates over education and memory culture ahead of regional elections.

Debates over political identity, education, and memory culture are intensifying across eastern Germany ahead of upcoming regional elections. Educators in several states report an increase in far-right symbols and extremist rhetoric among students. In response, Thuringia's education ministry, in partnership with the University of Jena, is deploying "constitutional coaches" to support schools in fostering democratic values.

In a parallel effort to address historical awareness, federal SED dictatorship victims' commissioner Evelyn Zupke called for mandatory student visits to East German memorial sites. Meanwhile, cultural policy has emerged as a key political debate. In Saxony-Anhalt, the Alternative for Germany party proposed stripping public funding from projects considered "anti-German," prompting concerns from critics regarding future support for Holocaust memorials, Bauhaus sites, and local performing arts institutions.
