Rising far-right concerns in schools, historical education proposals, and cultural funding disputes emerge across eastern Germany ahead of regional elections.

Ahead of upcoming state elections in eastern Germany, regional education and cultural sectors are facing heightened political and administrative challenges. Educators in eastern states report a surge in far-right extremism among students, including the use of prohibited symbols. In response to gaps in historical awareness, Evelyn Zupke, the federal commissioner for victims of the SED dictatorship, advocated making student visits to former East German memorial sites compulsory.

At the same time, cultural institutions in Saxony-Anhalt face uncertainty following proposals by the Alternative for Germany party to revoke funding for projects deemed "anti-German." Meanwhile, regional identity debates intensify on the campaign trail, and Berlin's school system faces administrative strain with nearly 400 teachers on sick leave for more than a year.
