Eastern German states face rising far-right influence in schools and culture

Eastern German states report growing political pressure and far-right sentiment in classrooms and cultural institutions ahead of upcoming state elections.
Educators and officials across eastern German states report mounting political pressure and far-right sentiment ahead of upcoming regional elections. Teachers in multiple schools have observed an increase in extremist symbols and anti-democratic behavior, leading Thuringia's education ministry to partner with the University of Jena to deploy "constitutional coaches" into classrooms. Concurrently, Evelyn Zupke, the federal commissioner for SED dictatorship victims, advocated for mandatory student visits to East German memorial sites to deepen historical understanding of communist rule.
Cultural policy has also become a major point of debate. In Saxony-Anhalt, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) proposed defunding cultural programs it considers "anti-German." The move has raised concern among administrators of Holocaust memorials, local theaters, and Bauhaus sites as debates over East German regional identity intensify before state polls.
