Debates over far-right student behavior, East German historical memory, and cultural funding cuts intensify ahead of state elections in eastern Germany.

Ahead of upcoming state elections, political and educational debates across eastern Germany are intensifying. Educators in eastern regions report a noticeable increase in far-right behavior among students, including the display of banned symbols and songs. In response to gaps in historical knowledge, federal SED victims' commissioner Evelyn Zupke has called for mandatory student visits to former East German memorial sites.

Concurrently, cultural funding has become a key campaign issue. In Saxony-Anhalt, the Alternative for Germany party proposed stripping public funds from cultural institutions and memorial projects it considers "anti-German," sparking concerns over local arts and Holocaust remembrance. Meanwhile, in Berlin, official data revealed that nearly 400 public school teachers have been on continuous sick leave for over a year, adding pressure to the region's education system.
