Eastern German schools and cultural bodies face rising far-right sentiment, funding threats, and severe teacher shortages in Berlin ahead of upcoming state elections.

Educational and cultural institutions in eastern Germany are facing growing challenges surrounding political sentiment and administrative strain ahead of regional elections.

Educators in eastern states report an increase in far-right behavior among students, including the use of banned symbols and nationalistic songs. In response to concerns over historical literacy, Evelyn Zupke, the federal commissioner for SED dictatorship victims, recommended making visits to East German memorial sites mandatory for pupils.

Meanwhile, political debates over regional identity are targeting cultural funding. In Saxony-Anhalt, the Alternative for Germany party proposed stripping financial support from cultural and historical sites it considers "anti-German."

Concurrently, Berlin's education sector continues to grapple with staffing issues, with official data disclosing that nearly 400 public school teachers have been on long-term sick leave for over a year.
