Investigation details secret US deportations as UN demands policy halt
An investigation reveals the U.S. transferred over 25,000 migrants to third countries, prompting UN experts to demand an immediate halt to the practice.
A joint media investigation led by Forbidden Stories has revealed that the U.S. government transferred over 25,000 migrants to 28 third countries under undisclosed bilateral agreements. Internal State Department documents indicate that approximately 20,000 people were bused to Mexico, while over 5,000 were flown to foreign nations with which they had no prior connections, including individuals previously granted protection by U.S. immigration courts.
In response, more than a dozen United Nations human rights experts urged Washington to immediately suspend third-country deportations, citing severe risks of torture and persecution. Concurrently, human rights organizations warned that U.S. authorities are preparing to deport hundreds of detained Afghans to Pakistan for eventual transfer to Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, potentially impacting relatives of former U.S. military allies.
