Russian ground advances stall as Moscow targets Ukrainian energy grid
Russian ground offensives in Ukraine have largely ground to a halt, prompting Moscow to escalate long-range strikes on energy infrastructure ahead of winter.
Russian ground offensives across Ukraine have stalled despite claims of battlefield success from Moscow, according to frontline tracking data. Independent mapping by DeepState and the Institute for the Study of War reported virtually no net territorial shifts over four weeks leading into late September. Although Russian forces seized approximately 133 square kilometers in August, Finnish analytical group Black Bird Group noted that overall progress remains severely constrained, with Ukrainian counterattacks reclaiming key areas near Oleksandrivka.
Concurrently, Moscow has shifted focus toward Ukrainian civilian infrastructure, launching intensified missile and drone strikes against power and heating facilities ahead of winter. Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhij Koreckyj stated that recent bombardments on the Kyiv region constituted the largest assault on energy infrastructure since spring. The renewed campaign coincides with a decline in Ukrainian air defense interception rates, which dropped from 92 percent in May to 83 percent in September.
