Southern and Western Europe face persistent extreme heatwaves, with record temperatures in Austria, red weather alerts in Italy, and thousands of heat-related excess deaths in France.

Southern and Western Europe face ongoing severe weather as a fourth major heatwave hits the continent. In Italy, health authorities issued red weather alerts for all 27 major cities, including Messina and Reggio Calabria, with temperatures forecast to reach 40 degrees Celsius. Officials urged residents to avoid direct sun exposure between 11:00 and 18:00.

Meanwhile, Austria recorded its highest temperature on record, reaching 40.8 degrees Celsius in a suburban area of Vienna. In France, health authorities reported over 7,300 excess deaths linked to 52 heatwave days since May. Further warnings have been issued for Britain and France as extreme heat, drought, and wildfire risks persist across the region.
