Orange Order march in Portadown remains stalled amid Garvaghy Road protest
An Orange Order parade in Portadown remains stalled after thousands of counter-protesters blocked Garvaghy Road following a High Court ruling permitting the march.
Tensions remained elevated in Portadown on Sunday as thousands of counter-protesters prevented an Orange Order parade from navigating Garvaghy Road. The standoff followed a late-night High Court ruling that upheld a Parades Commission determination allowing 35 marchers along the route for the first time since 1998.
Although scheduled to complete the procession during an early morning window, the marchers did not set off from Drumcree Church due to demonstrator blockades. Organizers entered discussions while the thoroughfare remained occupied.
The disruption has highlighted deep political fractures in Northern Ireland. Unionist representatives insisted that judicial decisions must be respected, whereas nationalist figures characterized the parade as a form of sectarian intimidation. Observers warn that the impasse threatens stability at Stormont as local authorities manage the ongoing deadlock.
