US and Iran exchange strikes near Strait of Hormuz as tensions rise
Tensions mount near the Strait of Hormuz as US forces sink Iranian vessels and Tehran responds with missile strikes against US bases in Jordan.
The military confrontation between the United States and Iran around the Strait of Hormuz has intensified following reciprocal strikes. US Central Command announced it destroyed five vessels linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps after an attempted attack on American naval ships. In response, Iranian forces launched 20 missiles targeting US military positions in Jordan.
Iranian state media reported that its forces struck six vessels, including three oil tankers and a US aircraft carrier. US intelligence officials warned that the Revolutionary Guard may escalate further. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump claimed the vital waterway remains open, stating Tehran faces "great difficulty." Emergency crews successfully extinguished a fire on a damaged commercial vessel, allowing maritime traffic to continue under heightened security measures.
