US strikes Iranian targets in Strait of Hormuz amid fragile diplomatic talks
US airstrikes hit Iranian positions in the Strait of Hormuz as diplomatic talks mediated by Qatar and Oman navigate new demands from Washington.
The United States military has executed fresh airstrikes against Iranian missile sites on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz, marking the first direct attack on Iranian territory in a month. Iranian state media confirmed that six naval personnel died during recent bombardments.
Despite the military escalation, diplomatic efforts persist. Qatari officials stated that discussions remain active to secure an agreement between Washington and Tehran, while Iran reported reaching an agreement with Oman on a new maritime route through the strait, provided external forces do not interfere.
However, negotiations face obstacles after US President Donald Trump announced plans to seek financial "compensations" from Tehran for past casualties tied to Iranian actions, adding friction to near-term diplomatic prospects.
