Ukraine expands domestic arms output amid air defense shortages
Ukraine is ramping up domestic missile and glide bomb production as bureaucratic delays stall local manufacturing of U.S.-licensed Patriot air defense systems.
Ukraine is expanding domestic weapons production to offset critical shortages of Western air defense systems during intensified Russian ballistic missile attacks.
President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that setting up local manufacturing of U.S.-licensed Patriot interceptors could take between 12 months and several years due to bureaucratic procedures and licensing requirements. To address this prolonged vulnerability, two Ukrainian firms are developing indigenous ballistic missiles, though technical challenges remain before mass production can begin.
Additionally, the Ukrainian military is acquiring the locally designed "Equalizer" guidance kit. Created by DG Industry and the Brave1 defense cluster, the system converts unguided aviation bombs into precision glide munitions compatible with Soviet-era platforms and Western aircraft, strengthening Kyiv's strike capacity while reducing foreign dependencies.
