Crown Prince Haakon succeeds King Harald V following monarch's death at 89
Crown Prince Haakon has acceded to the throne following the death of Norway's King Harald V at age 89 after a period of severe illness.
Norway has begun its royal transition following the death of King Harald V, who passed away peacefully at Oslo’s Rikshospitalet on Friday morning at the age of 89. Following the monarch's passing, his son, Crown Prince Haakon, has automatically acceded to the throne as Norway's new monarch.
Prior to his death, King Harald was Europe’s oldest reigning monarch, having served for 35 years under his official motto, "Alt for Norge." He had been hospitalized in critical condition while receiving treatment for hemolytic anemia and a bacterial bloodstream infection.
Tributes have poured in from across Europe. King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden expressed "great sadness" over the loss of his close friend and fellow sovereign. Crowds gathered outside the royal palace in Oslo to lay flowers as national flags were lowered to half-mast.
