US-Canada trade conflict escalates as Ottawa unveils retaliatory tariffs
Canada has enacted counter-tariffs up to 50 percent on $20 billion of US goods following the failure of bilateral trade negotiations.
Following the breakdown of bilateral trade negotiations, the United States enacted 50 percent tariffs under Section 338 on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian imports, hitting about five percent of Canada's annual exports to the US.
In response, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney suspended further talks and announced dollar-for-dollar counter-tariffs of up to 50 percent on nearly C$28 billion ($20 billion) of American goods. The Canadian levies cover items including steel, apparel, furniture, and agricultural products. Ottawa also introduced financial assistance packages to protect domestic businesses and workers from economic disruption. US President Donald Trump warned that Canadian retaliation could prompt further American trade restrictions.
