Deadly Russian strikes hit Kyiv as Ukrainian attacks prompt Moscow air defense shift
Massive Russian air strikes killed at least 17 people in Kyiv, while Ukrainian attacks prompted Moscow to redeploy air defense rings around major cities.
Russian strikes across Ukraine have escalated, with a massive aerial attack on Kyiv and its surrounding region killing at least 17 people and injuring 44. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that missile interceptor systems "could have saved the lives" of those killed. Russian forces also dropped glide bombs on residential neighborhoods in Zaporizhzhia, causing further casualties.
Simultaneously, Ukrainian drone strikes targeted several regions, including Belgorod, Crimea, and the Black Sea coast near Gelendzhik. According to Zelensky, Russia responded to the incoming attacks by redeploying air defense systems to form three protective rings around Moscow and St. Petersburg. Separately, Italian media reported a suicide bombing in Moscow outside a venue housing Russia's air force chief.
