Germany faces mounting hybrid threats and defense spending debate
German authorities face foreign hybrid threats and disinformation while experts question traditional military procurement.
German authorities and security experts are voicing growing concerns over foreign hybrid warfare and the strategic direction of national defense procurement.
Police records across federal states indicate that state-backed foreign actors are suspected in more than 100 incidents involving sabotage and unauthorized drone overflights, including a recent discovery of an explosive-laden drone at Leipzig/Halle airport. Concurrently, security agencies warned that Russian disinformation operations have intensified ahead of upcoming state elections in September. These campaigns reportedly target major political parties to undermine democratic stability, while excluding the pro-Russian AfD.
Meanwhile, defense analysts are questioning Germany's military spending strategy. As low-cost unmanned aerial vehicles increasingly dominate modern warfare, experts query whether multi-billion-euro investments in traditional heavy armor remain effective for future conflicts.
