EU interior ministers to meet as Ceuta death toll rises to 67
EU interior ministers will hold emergency talks on Tuesday after 22 member states requested coordinated action over Ceuta, where the death toll has risen to 67.
The situation in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta has calmed, but the death toll from mass migrant arrivals from Morocco has risen to 67, according to Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska.
EU interior ministers will convene for an emergency meeting on Tuesday to address the border crisis after 22 member states jointly demanded coordinated action and stronger external border controls. The talks follow tense diplomatic exchanges, including Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s earlier proposal to temporarily exclude Spain from the Schengen zone.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez criticized the stance of several member states, denouncing reactions to the crisis as "selfish, polarising and unlawful." Spanish authorities maintain that arrivals will be returned to Morocco.
