Discrepancies emerge over Ceuta migrant numbers as Italy seeks Spain's Schengen suspension
Conflicting reports emerge over the extent of the migrant surge into Ceuta, while Italy prepares to challenge Spain's Schengen status.
Reports regarding the scale of the migrant influx into Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta vary significantly across European outlets. Czech magazine Respect cited Ceuta Mayor Juan Jesús Vivas stating that roughly 60,000 people entered the territory within a single day, leaving 34 dead from drowning. Conversely, Spanish outlet El Mundo and Norwegian broadcaster TV 2 Nyheter reported that around 20,000 migrants crossed, with at least 18 fatalities recorded.
In response to the crossings, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced plans to return migrants to Morocco, describing the surge as an infringement on territorial integrity. Meanwhile, Austrian newspaper Die Presse highlighted that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is preparing to formally request Spain's suspension from the Schengen passport-free zone following the crisis.
