UN reaches milestone definition on autonomous weapons as militaries expand AI use
In Geneva, 128 states agreed on a definition for autonomous weapons as Western armed forces and Ukraine expand operational AI deployment.
In Geneva, 128 nations reached an agreement on an official definition for autonomous weapon systems following joint warnings from the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross regarding machines targeting human beings.
Concurrently, Western militaries are accelerating artificial intelligence integration. Germany's Ministry of Defence stated that semi-autonomous systems may perform operational functions independently under specific circumstances, provided that the ultimate decision to employ lethal force remains under human control. To preserve data sovereignty, the German military decided to build a proprietary AI analytics platform rather than utilizing software from American vendor Palantir.
Additionally, Ukraine and NATO have co-developed two AI models to predict adversary drone trajectories and assist artillery targeting in active combat operations.
