UN reaches agreement on autonomous weapons definition as military AI deployment expands
128 states in Geneva agreed on an official definition for autonomous weapons, while Germany and NATO expand military AI systems for data analysis and drone defense.
In Geneva, 128 states agreed on an official definition for autonomous weapon systems following warnings from the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross regarding machines targeting humans.
Simultaneously, Western armed forces are broadening operational artificial intelligence deployment. Germany's Ministry of Defence confirmed that semi-autonomous systems could execute certain tasks without continuous human intervention, provided ultimate command over lethal force remains human. To preserve data sovereignty, Germany opted to build an in-house AI analytics platform rather than adopting software from US provider Palantir.
Meanwhile, Ukraine and NATO have jointly created two AI models designed to forecast enemy drone flight paths and assist artillery targeting in combat operations.
