UN defines autonomous weapons as militaries expand AI integration

128 nations agreed on a definition for autonomous weapons in Geneva, while Germany, NATO, and Ukraine advance military AI applications.
Global efforts to regulate artificial intelligence in warfare are accelerating alongside practical military deployments. In Geneva, 128 nations established a formal definition for autonomous weapons systems following joint warnings from the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross against crossing "a moral red line" by allowing machines to target humans independently.
Concurrently, Western militaries are expanding AI integration. Germany's Ministry of Defence confirmed that semi-autonomous systems can function independently under specific circumstances, while affirming that "the decision on the use of military force remains with humans." Additionally, the German military rejected software from US provider Palantir, opting to develop a proprietary data analytics platform. Meanwhile, Ukraine and NATO have jointly developed two AI models designed to forecast drone trajectories and assist artillery targeting.
