Ukrainian parliament prepares to vote on new defence minister amid military overhaul

Ukraine's parliament prepares to vote on Yevhen Khmara as defence minister as military chief Mykhailo Drapatyj overhauls command structures.
Ukraine's parliament is set to vote on President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's nomination of former intelligence chief Yevhen Khmara as the new defence minister, alongside a confirmation vote for Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.
The leadership transition follows the dismissal of former defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov, who has openly criticised wartime governance and corruption while calling for national elections during the conflict with Russia.
At the same time, the newly appointed commander-in-chief of the armed forces, Mykhailo Drapatyj, is implementing significant reforms across military command structures. The restructuring aims to dismantle entrenched internal networks left by previous leadership and place experienced frontline officers into key strategic positions across the defence forces.
