Ukraine sets conditions for energy strike pause as cross-border attacks continue

Cross-border strikes between Russia and Ukraine persisted overnight, resulting in casualties across several Ukrainian regions and damage to a Russian oil refinery. The continued hostilities coincide with upcoming visits by U.S. diplomatic envoys to both nations to discuss potential peace frameworks. While both capitals reportedly agreed to suspend direct attacks on Kyiv and Moscow during these diplomatic discussions, broader regional fighting has not ceased.

The escalation comes as U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that both countries agreed to refrain from targeting energy infrastructure. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy clarified that Kyiv will only halt strikes on Russian energy facilities if Western partners guarantee Moscow stops targeting Ukrainian energy sites, transport networks, and food supply chains. Zelenskyy is scheduled to discuss the conflict during the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
