A study shows women held just 15% of Portuguese cabinet posts in 50 years, as domestic violence reports stay high and Atlantic migration to Spain drops.

A new study by the Francisco Manuel dos Santos Foundation reveals that women have comprised only 15 percent of Portuguese cabinet ministers over the last 50 years, frequently requiring higher technical qualifications than male counterparts to reach executive office. Meanwhile, domestic violence remains persistent across Portugal, where law enforcement registered over 14,000 complaints—an average of 82 reported cases daily.

In refugee integration, eight Afghan women marked one year of living in Portugal after escaping severe Taliban restrictions on education and public life.

Separately, International Organization for Migration figures show a 78 percent drop in irregular maritime arrivals to Spain via the West African Atlantic route between January and April 2026. Officials attribute the decrease to enhanced maritime patrols and bilateral border agreements between Senegal and Mauritania.
