A fourth summer heatwave pushes temperatures near 40°C across Europe, setting records in Austria and causing thousands of excess deaths in France.

Extreme weather conditions continue across Europe as a fourth summer heatwave brings temperatures near 40 degrees Celsius. In Italy, health officials placed all 27 major cities on high heat alert, advising residents to stay indoors between 11:00 and 18:00 following several heat-related fatalities.

Meteorological records show historic highs elsewhere on the continent. Austria registered its highest temperature on record at 40.8 degrees Celsius near Vienna. Meanwhile, French health authorities reported more than 7,300 excess deaths connected to 52 days of excessive heat between May and July. Meteorological agencies in France and the United Kingdom warn of persistent elevated temperatures, compounding ongoing drought conditions and heightened wildfire risks across the region.
