European health authorities have issued severe weather alerts as an intense heatwave pushes temperatures to record highs and causes thousands of excess deaths across the continent.

A fourth summer heatwave has prompted Italian health officials to issue red weather alerts across 27 major cities, including Messina and Reggio Calabria, as temperatures approach 40 degrees Celsius. The heat, expected to persist for at least a week, has already been linked to several fatalities in the country.

Extreme weather continues to impact other parts of Europe. Austria registered its highest temperature on record at 40.8 degrees Celsius in a Vienna suburb, while French health authorities reported over 7,300 excess deaths linked to 52 heatwave days between May and July.

With ongoing severe drought and elevated wildfire risks, both France and the United Kingdom are bracing for further extreme temperatures following a month where several regions globally recorded their hottest July on record.
