Intense heatwaves across Europe have prompted red alerts in 27 Italian cities, broken national temperature records in Austria, and resulted in thousands of excess deaths in France.

Persistent heatwaves continue to sweep across Europe, setting temperature records and compounding severe public health concerns. In Italy, health authorities issued red alerts across all 27 major urban centers as the country faced its fourth extreme heat event of the summer, with temperatures projected to reach 40 degrees Celsius.

Austria recorded its highest temperature on record after readings reached 40.8 degrees Celsius in a Vienna suburb. Meanwhile, French health officials confirmed more than 7,300 excess deaths linked to recurring heatwaves between May and July, following over 50 days of extreme heat conditions since mid-June.

Meteorologists warn that elevated temperatures, prolonged drought, and heightened wildfire risks are expected to persist across Western Europe, including France and the United Kingdom.
