Extreme heat sweeps Europe as Italy places 27 cities on red alert, Austria breaks temperature records, and France reports more than 7,300 excess deaths.

Extreme heat continues to affect large parts of Europe, prompting emergency measures, breaking records, and driving high mortality rates. In Italy, the health ministry placed all 27 major cities on red alert during its fourth summer heatwave, with temperatures climbing toward 40 degrees Celsius.

Austria recorded its highest-ever temperature as a Vienna suburb reached 40.8 degrees Celsius. In France, health officials reported more than 7,300 excess deaths linked to recurring heatwaves between May and July, amid more than 50 days of extreme heat conditions since mid-June.

Meteorologists warn that intense conditions will persist, with parts of Western Europe, including France and the United Kingdom, bracing for further 40-degree temperatures alongside elevated drought and wildfire hazards.
