Russian frontline progress ground to a halt in September, prompting Moscow to intensify long-range missile and drone attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure ahead of winter.

Russian ground forces achieved minimal progress across the Ukrainian frontline through September, contradicting official claims from Moscow. Mapping data from the Institute for the Study of War and DeepState indicated negligible net territorial changes over a four-week period, while Finland's Black Bird Group recorded limited Russian gains alongside Ukrainian counterattacks near Oleksandrivka.

With battlefield momentum stalled, Moscow has intensified long-range air strikes against Ukrainian energy infrastructure ahead of winter. Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhij Koreckyj confirmed that recent attacks marked the largest barrage against power plants since last spring, with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy identifying Kyiv as a primary target. Meanwhile, Ukrainian air defense drone interception rates declined from 92 percent in May to 83 percent in September.
